According to a report in The New York Times: In Germany, where studies have been conducted for nearly two decades, St. John's Wort is the leading anti-depressant, out selling PROZAC 4 to 1. October 11, 2002. The herb St. John's wort is used to treat mild to moderate depression and has also been used for skin injuries and burns. But recent research has found it to also possess antioxidant properties and to increase the liver's ability to detoxify chemicals. Through a series of experiments, researchers investigated the effect of St. John's wort on leukemia and glioma, a type of brain cancer. The experiments showed that St. John's wort can inhibit the growth of leukemia and glioma cells. Moreover, exposing St. John's wort to light appears to increase the anti-cancer properties of the herb.
SSRIs work by increasing the availability of serotonin in synapses (junctions between neurons) by blocking their reuptake.
